Why Counselling?
We all have changes in our lives. Sometimes these are planned and expected, sometimes not. Either way change can often prove unsettling and can affect our ability to cope. Changes can cause difficult memories to resurface, but often it is hard for us to realise what is wrong; we just know that something is. Counselling, or Therapy, provides a way for people to identify their problems and develop new skills to deal with them, thus allowing them to move forward and change their lives.
What Do We Do?
My areas of specialty are:
Person-Centred Counselling
Also called Client-Centred Counselling, this is based on the idea that a client seeking help in solving a problem, can enter into a relationship with the counsellor, who through an empathic approach enables the client to freely express emotions and feelings. This enables the client to come to terms with negative feelings, which may have caused emotional problems. The objective is for the client to become able to trust his/her own resources, thus building their own potential to understand themselves, and resolve their problems.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
This involves working with the client to develop a shared understanding of the client's problem and identify how this affects the client's thoughts, behaviour, feelings and daily functions. Based on the understanding of the client’s individual problem, or problems, we work together to identify goals and agree a shared treatment plan. The focus of therapy is to enable clients to generate solutions to their problems that are more helpful than their present ways of coping. This will often involve clients using the time between appointments to implement strategies discussed and agreed within the sessions.
The Practice offers treatments for:
- Stress
- Depression
- Anger Management
- Anxiety and panic attacks
